Let’s Talk About Art

The piece of art that I chose to do this project on is the Self Made Man by artist Bobbie Carlyle. I chose this piece because I believe that it is a significant piece of art that depending on your views of the sculpture is a man rebuilding himself from his past, or he is freeing himself from his past problems. I believe that this piece is art because it shows the true creativity of the artist, and what it could represent to the people that see it.

The artist’s intention for this piece of art was for the sculpture to symbolize a man that is carving his future, and his character from stone and making it how he wants. I believe that this is a beautiful piece of art that shows the struggles of man trying to free himself from something. Whether it be past experiences, a heartbreak, or whatever. It shows the determination and eventual triumph of man. This piece of art is relevant to society because everyone has something from their past that they wish they could change or that had never happened to begin with. This statue represents the ability to free yourself from your past and live the life that you want.

I interviewed someone outside of our class on what they see this sculpture representing. At first glance they said “it looks like he is trying to perfect himself from what he used to be”. They also said that “it could represent someone trying to be healthy and get in shape”. However they also agreed with me when i told them that I thought it represented “someone trying to better themselves by getting rid of the past”.

My initial reaction for this piece was that it was a very beautiful work of art that showed an incredible amount of skill and creativity. After continuously looking at it and analyzing the piece I tried to find a deeper meaning as to what it could represent, I eventually made the connection that it could represent someone trying to escape their past demons. Most of my connections were about someone trying to change for the better, after my interview my opinions were reaffirmed because of how similar the person’s views that I interviewed were. Overall I believe that this is a beautiful work of art that holds some value to society, this statue has a large impact on nearly everyone that encounters it because of what it represents and what it could mean to them.Image result for self made man statue
